Cornelius, NC — The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce convened local business leaders, elected officials, and regional stakeholders for its January Focus Friday: Raleigh Perspective legislative briefing, centered on transportation infrastructure, court staffing challenges, artificial intelligence in government, and emerging state policy issues.
The session featured insights from Senator Vicki Sawyer and Representative Beth Helfrich, who provided updates from Raleigh while engaging with Chamber members on the issues most impacting our Lake Norman communities.
Transportation Infrastructure and Toll Revenue
A major focus of the discussion was transportation funding and congestion along the I-77 corridor. Senator Sawyer discussed the need for shoulder hardening on I-77 and advocated that any future toll lane revenues—particularly from potential new projects south of Charlotte—be reinvested locally.
Participants also discussed the importance of regional collaboration among towns, chambers, metropolitan planning organizations, and business alliances to ensure transportation dollars remain aligned with local needs.
Court Staffing and Magistrate Access
Representative Helfrich addressed ongoing concerns about the unfilled magistrate position in North Mecklenburg County, despite state funding being in place. Local leaders expressed frustration with the lack of clarity from the Chief Justice’s office and reaffirmed their commitment to working collectively to resolve the issue.
Both legislators underscored the importance of accountability and transparency, noting that access to magistrates is critical for residents, law enforcement, and the business community.
Artificial Intelligence in Government and Healthcare
The briefing also explored the growing role of artificial intelligence in government operations and economic development. Chamber members heard examples of how AI is already being deployed in healthcare, with Mike Riley, President of Novant Health - Huntersville Medical Center sharing real-world applications improving efficiency and patient care.
Discussions extended to state agencies modernizing legacy IT systems, the opportunities AI presents for public service delivery, and the need to balance innovation with responsible implementation.
State Budget and Legislative Outlook
The meeting included a high-level overview of North Carolina’s biennial budget process. With the current state budget totaling approximately $31.9 billion, legislators highlighted priorities including education, healthcare, transportation, Medicaid funding, and disaster recovery resources.
Recent legislative wins for Mecklenburg County were noted, including expanded funding for the district attorney’s office and additional legal staff—investments long viewed as overdue for one of the state’s most economically significant regions.
Upcoming Chamber Programs
The Chamber also announced several upcoming programs, including the Lake Norman AI Summit on February 25th, to be held at the Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius, as well as future Focus Fridays featuring local mayors and healthcare leaders.
Looking Ahead
Focus Friday concluded with clear next steps for elected officials, town leaders, and regional partners, reinforcing the Chamber’s role as an advocate for business.
“These conversations are critical,” Chamber Chair Leah Trowbridge stated, “because the decisions made in Raleigh directly shape the economic vitality, infrastructure, and quality of life for our Lake Norman communities.”
