North Mecklenburg County Forum, June 25

The Latino Civic Engagement Committee (LCEC) is hosting the North Mecklenburg Candidates Forum at Lake Forest Church in Huntersville on Saturday, June 25, between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.

"The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for candidates to interact with Latino voters living in Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville.

It will be a unique experience for hopefuls running to represent the area to have their first outreach to Hispanics as they begin campaigning for the November general election," said Teresa Peña, spokesperson for LCEC.

Non-Partisan

The Forum is a non-partisan event in which Republican and Democratic candidates participate.

Federal, State, and County Positions

The list includes, at the federal level, the two contenders for the contested North Carolinian federal Senate seat and the two candidates for the federal House of Representatives for the 12 Congressional District.

At the state level, the state Senate challengers for Districts 37 and 41 and the candidates for State House Districts 98, 106, and 107.

At the local level, candidates for the three at-large Mecklenburg Board of Commissioners open seats and challengers for the Mecklenburg Board District 1 Commissioner.

Community Participation

Candidates will share their platforms and plans for the Hispanic community.

In addition, members of the Latino community in the audience will be able to ask questions.

Interpreters will be available at the event to translate into Spanish and English.

Organizations Involved

Grassroots, state, and national organizations are involved in the initiative: Unity in Community-North Meck (UiC), the New North Carolina Project (NNCP), the Hispanic Federation (HF), the NALEO Educational Fund, the Camino Research Institute (CRI), the Latino Civic Engagement Project (LCEP) and Faith and Health Latino Coalition (F&S-LC).

Data

In the municipalities of Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville, located in northern Mecklenburg County, there are more than 10,000 Hispanics, of which more than 3,000 are eligible to vote.

A test

"The Latino forum is a test for the candidate's commitment to the Hispanic Community," noted Lenin Caro, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) and executive of the Camino Research Institute (CRI), who will moderate the event.

LCEC Mission

Incepted in August 2017, the Latino Civic Engagement Committee has worked to increase participation by Hispanics in the political process by growing the number of voters in every election cycle and bringing the community closer to its elected officials and vice versa.
